Since the discontinuation of the Honda S2000 in 2009, rumors have been flying about it’s return. Finally, it seems as though the rumors have come to be reality.
Reportedly the new S2000 will stay true to its original design. It will be rear wheel drive with a front mounted engine and of course the classic ragtop. The new S2000 will fill the void in Honda’s product offerings, providing a mid end roadster, much like Mazda’s MX-5 Miata.
There has been talk that the Honda will actually be an offering from Acura (Honda’s high end brand) due to the amount of focus they’ve had on front wheel drive system. If the S2000 was to have front wheel drive, it would ultimately fail and because of this it needs rear wheel drive.
On top of this, there has been rumors about a Type-R version of the S2000, which would boast a turbocharger and likely 300+ horsepower. With a higher end suspension, Limited Slip differential and body variations, the Type-R would fit right in with Honda’s other Type-R offerings.
It may take a few years for the S2000 to finally return to the market, but as a personal fan I sure hope we see a strong return of this classic Honda roadster.
